Did you know that the #1 source of job leads is through family and friends? That's called networking and it's not just a myth! If everyone you know is familier with your abilities and interests in specific kinds of openings, they might head of an opening (new position, someone has retired, etc.) and pass the information on to you.

Job Fairs: How to Make Them Work for You

The Career Opportunities News stresses that attending job fairs is a good way to make in-person contact with companies for which you might like to work. Here are some tips to make these functions work for you:

  • Before attending, find out what companies are going to be there and research their products / services as well as their employment needs.
  • You may send your resume and cover letter to those employers in which you have a strong interest ahead of the fair. Let them know that you are looking forward to meeting them at the fair.
  • Prepare what you're going to say. Expect to give employers a verbal summary of your qualifications in less than one minute.
  • Finally, dress professionally, arrice when the fair opens, and head straight for your favorite employer. Let the employer know that it is #1 on your list. Bring a good supply of resumes, a list of references, have in mind the questions you're going to ask, and find out from the employer what you should do to advance your candidacy.

Employers require completed applications to use as tools when evaluating qualifications and deciding whom to call for interviews. Therefore, applications are important and should not be neglected.


Don't substitute your resume for an application. If you feel to limited by the space provided on the application, attach your resume.
