Conducting The Job Search During the Holidays

Job Tips November 2002

The Job Search

It is said that less than 10 percent of people get jobs through the Internet or ads, and up to 60 percent are through networking and personal contacts. This means you need to make new business contacts by:

  • Attending meetings of professional societies and your local networking groups.
  • Speak with friends who work at the firms you are interested in and inquire about positions that you may qualify for.

The Washington Post

The Washington Post had this to say about recent labor market trends:

  • In August there were 3.49 million job openings where employers were actively searching for workers.
  • The services industry had the largest number of openings, with 1.5 million.
  • Retailers had 642,000 openings.
  • Manufactures, which have been shedding employees for more than two years, trailed with just 295,000 openings.
  • Governments, both federal and local, had 501,000 openings.
    Summary

Bounce back - write that resume, target a few firms instead of sending generic resumes to dozens of companies, stay in contact with friends and associates, and know your worth. Millions of people each month are either getting hired or fired so stay connected and in tune of what the job market has to offer you.
