The supervisor
is the most powerful factor in the employee motivation and morale.
Your mood when you first come to work, body language and attitude
immediately expresses how you value your employees. Feeling
valued by your manager is extremely important in employee motivation.
When employees feel valued they usually like their work and
feel like there is opportunity for advancement. Building a motivated
workforce requires that you consistently pay attention to your
expressions and actions with your staff.
Supervisor Tips include:
Use
motivational words that show respect
Demonstrate that you value your staff with words like “You’re
doing a good Job” Thank you and please also show respect.
Provide simple gifts that might be a quote, a pen with their
name on it or something else that shows appreciation. By using
these words and actions you can make their day.
Be
clear in your expectations.
Make sure that your employee gives you feedback on their understanding
of your expectations. If staff is not clear they could think
that you do not know what you are doing. This is bad news
for maintaining positive morale. Make sure you share the goals
and reasons why for doing the tasks. If you have to make a
change during the task make sure you explain why.
Communicate
with your employees on how they are doing.
Employees want to know whether they have to do a project well
or not. It works the best if you give them feedback as soon
as possible. If mistakes were made they will gain the feedback
necessary to do the job right the next time. When compliments
are shared morale improves and motivation remains high.
Make
sure you provide training
If your budget is low find opportunities for low cost training.
Contact your local WorkSource Center. They may have funds
available to up grade the skills of your employee’s.
Create a process to have staff mentor/coach other staff teaching
them new skills. See if you can pay for training as part of
your benefit package. The ability to keep learning will keep
your employees moving in a positive career direction.
Make
sure that your work arrival sets a positive tone for the day.
If you arrive at work stressed out and in a bad mood looking
overworked and unhappy, your employees will learn to avoid
you and morale will be hard to recapture. On the other hand
if you come in the office smiling, waling tall and confident
greeting your employees, it will set the stage for an immeasurable
impact on positive employee motivation and morale
Employees need consequences both positive
and not so positive.
Recognizing employees with a thank you card and a small gift
that is above and beyond expectations is definitely a motivation
and morale booster. They also need a fair and consistent gentle
disciplinary system when they fail to perform effectively.
Nothing hurts morale more than un-addressed problems. People
need to know what is expected from you.
By following these simple guidelines your employee’s
will be more motivated and the team morale will substantially
improve.
